Herb vines and shrubs cover the mountain floors, making it the ideal home to over 350 bird species and 120 species of animals, including its remarkable primate population. Established in 1991 as a park to protect the endangered mountain gorillas, Bwindi is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its exceptional habitat diversity and protection of endangered species. Approximately half of the world's population of mountain gorillas (more than 400) call Bwindi home.
